Early this past Sunday morning, I was spreading out a blanket in our living room so I could do my exercises. My ten-year-old daughter watched as I prepared.
"Addy, do you want to stretch with dad?"
I was excited to show her something new; I guess I thought it would be nice to show off my newfound skills and amazing flexibility. I was soon put to shame by a little girl.
"Ok, on this one, just reach out as far as you can . . . With this one, just try to touch the floor . . . If you can, stretch to the right . . . Wow, does that hurt? . . . no?"
It soon dawned on me that my 10 year old had mastered my stretching routine in one sitting. Addyson was demonstrating more flexibility than I have been able to achieve in a month of daily work! Sad.
What a great reminder for me that attaining health is not about pioneering into undiscovered territory. Becoming healthy is all about returning to our original design. I am sure that Adam and Eve could pull off an awesome pigeon pose! Beyond the physical; my spiritual life, mental health, emotional balance, and relational health are likewise growing back towards original design. You and I were made in God's image and likeness, and into His image and likeness we are called to return. God designed us to be healthy, we are invited to come back to that way of life.
Paul states it this way in Romans 8; The creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration. . . in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.
Think of it- all of creation is groaning, waiting in eager anticipation for the sons and daughters of the Most High to be revealed. Creation awaits its restoration. And you are the child Paul refers to, the one in whom Christ will be revealed. Did you know that your own physical body is a part of creation? It too groans and waits for the dawning light of Christ to fully saturate you, to be revealed in your thought life, your emotional ebb and flow, your friendships, and your spirit.
God is calling us, restoring us, inviting us, renewing us.
And all of creation watches, fervently awaiting that dawn.
